What is
AGEING DEAL?

Longer lives are one of our most remarkable collective achievements, however it poses an important challenge to our European societies that require important transformation to support healthy ageing together. This includes changes to the healthcare systems and to the society as a whole to ensure that healthy ageing policies and innovations promote health and equity across European generations and regions. Ageing Deal is a groundbreaking European initiative dedicated to fostering a healthier, more inclusive future for older adults.

Science and Innovation projects can be catalyst to these transformations. The Ageing Deal will bring together citizens, researchers, clinicians, companies, policymakers, and projects in a collaborative ecosystem for Healthy Ageing Together. Ageing does not start after a special birthday. We start ageing when we start living and our opportunities for healthy longevity (keeping our health while we are growing older) strongly depends on series of life-course transitions and opportunities. People will need to retain health and to make informed decisions that require both health and digital literacy. Rooted in a life-course perspective, the Ageing Deal advocates ageing as a continuous process shaped by biological, social, digital, economic, and environmental factors. It embraces the motto “Ageing Healthier Together”, ensuring that no one is left behind in the adoption of approaches that improve well-being and longevity.

The combination of open sciences and trustworthy innovations, the European Health Data Space and other European cohorts with rapid digital transformations hold unprecedented opportunities. It has the potential to increase people’s health, autonomy and independence while ageing. It should help transform and optimise healthcare systems and pathways, integrating prevention and care. In our era of rapid digital transformation, Ageing Deal must also prioritise health and digital literacy, equipping ageing citizens with the knowledge and skills needed to cope with the management of their own health and be involved in the modern healthcare landscape with more confidence and self-esteem.

The Ageing Deal is a new initiative by European projects funded under the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action, call HORIZON-HLTH-2023-STAYHLTH-01-01: The Silver Deal – Person-centred health and care in European regions. Shifting our focus from ‘Silver’ to ‘Ageing’, the Ageing Deal fosters policies and innovations for healthier and more inclusive future for older adults.

Our proposed Ageing Deal is designed as a think tank to shape futures with healthier ageing. Whether you are a researcher, healthcare professional, policymaker, innovator, or community/patient advocate, your expertise and commitment can contribute to a future where ageing is embraced with dignity, technology is leveraged responsibly, and no one is left behind.

Workshops (parallel)

Each participant will attend two 45’ workshops

Workshop 1: Neighbourhood environments supporting healthy ageing
This workshop by the STAGE project will engage participants in the co-creation of the Age-friendly Neighbourhood Atlas, one of the outputs being developed in the STAGE project.

The workshop introduces the concept of the Atlas and the environmental features supporting the definition of a healthy and active ageing index.

We will discuss how the atlas is built including the mapping process and expectations from policy makers, how to use it, and the potential users. We will also discuss the ethical considerations, such as rating, that may raise discrimination and inequity across neighbourhood.

Workshop 2: Bringing digital innovations into real-world for Healthy Ageing, Inspired by the Ageing Deal
This workshop by the COMFORTAge Project will showcase the project’s combined approach (Living Labs and Digital Innovation Hubs) towards the acceleration of digital innovations uptake through real-world experimentation.
We will elaborate on methods and infrastructures that will be used to enhance the real-world transference of our research work and results into the daily lives of older adults. During this workshop we will introduce prototypes of envisaged key digital solutions, like virtual care assistants, serious games interventions and personalised training platforms.

Workshop 3: Age-friendly Ecosystems
This workshop by the STAGE project will bring together participants to discuss age-friendly ecosystems for healthy ageing in Europe. The discussion will include ethical, historical, healthcare, and policy perspectives.
Participants will engage in an interactive exchange to explore the barriers and opportunities for fostering age-friendly ecosystems that support and promote healthy ageing. The session aims to facilitate dialogue on the critical challenges and actionable strategies to improve environments that promote well-being throughout the life course.

Workshop 4: Citizen engagement and self-management
This workshop by the COMFORTAge project will focus on support, training and motivational strategies for citizen engagement and self-management. The session will use group dynamics techniques, with role playing games similar to the ones used in co-creation workshops.
